Chris Reygaert
10+ Years Experience Fly Fishing Fiordland Waters · NZPFGA Certified Guide
Experience fiordland’s fly fishing paradise with Te Anau Local Fly Fishing Guide - Chris Reygaert. Regarded as one of the world’s best fishing destinations, these waters are also in the heart of incredible, untouched nature. Marvel at the amazing scenery as you make your way to the fishing destination, before rigging up the fly rods and testing your skills on the willy brown and rainbow trout that abound.
A lifelong fly fisherman, Chris Reygaert traces his passion back to his formative years in Gent, Belgium, where his Uncle — president of the local fly fishing club — first introduced him to the sport. That early foundation set the course for a career that has spanned continents and culminated in over a decade guiding on some of the world's finest trout waters.
After sharpening his skills chasing trout across mainland Australia and hunting wild fish through the rivers and highland lakes of Tasmania and the remote reaches of Western Australia, Chris arrived in New Zealand's South Island and discovered what he'd been searching for all along. He planted roots in Te Anau — the gateway to Fiordland — and hasn't stopped exploring since.
"Over a decade of guiding in Te Anau means there is very little that happens on these waters that Chris isn't privy to."
With more than 10 years of professional guiding experience in Te Anau and the greater Fiordland–Southland region, Chris has built a reputation as one of New Zealand's most knowledgeable and dedicated fly fishing guides. He holds full New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association (NZPFGA) membership — your assurance that every trip meets the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and fish welfare.
Chris's connection to the wider fly fishing industry runs deep. As part of the Southern Latitude Guides network, he operates within a circle of some of New Zealand's finest guides. He's proud to work alongside Gin Clear Media — the team behind some of the most stunning fly fishing content produced in Aotearoa — and has been involved in the prestigious Fly Fishing Film Festival (F3T), bringing the culture and craft of the sport to audiences around the world.
On the water, Chris fishes and guides with gear he genuinely trusts. He puts Scott Fly Rods, fly fishing's most respected rod builders to work every single day on rivers that don't forgive sloppy tackle. He relies on Tonic Eyewear for polarised optics that make spotting fish in Fiordland's gin-clear currents a genuine advantage, and he stocks only the best local patterns through his partnership with Manic Tackle Project — New Zealand's go-to source for serious fly fishing gear.
What sets Chris apart isn't just the years — it's what those years have taught him. He's watched seasons change, hatches evolve, and trout grow. That kind of knowledge can't be downloaded. It lives in the soles of your wading boots and the back of your mind at 6am when the mist is still sitting on the river.
Whether you're picking up a fly rod for the first time or you've been casting dries since before Chris picked up his first rod in Belgium, you'll leave the river having learned something, caught fish you won't stop talking about, and experienced Fiordland the way it deserves to be experienced — slowly, quietly, and with a big trout on the end of your line.
